Chipotle Mexican Restaurant reported quarterly earnings with total revenues of $2.02 billion and EPS of $5.70. Same store sales increased by 9 percent as compared to analyst consensus estimate of 7.9 percent. Operating margins came in at 20.7% versus an estimate of 21.7%. The company cited higher food, beverage and packaging costs and noted that "price hikes partially offset higher costs."

In restaurant sales increased 33 percent while online ordering and digital sales accounted for a whopping 42%. The company anticipates second quarter comparable sales to increase 10 to 12 percent.

CEO of Chipotle, Brian Niccol on CNBC commented "we are going to find ways to automate the jobs in the restaurant that frankly are just very hard to do" referring to frying chips using robots. 

Niccol continues "We are working really hard to make these digital orders as seamless, as easy as possible and that is where Chipotlane comes in. When you order digitally,select your time to pick up, and you don't even have to get out of your car... and you are out of there in less than two minutes," referring to the hybrid online ordering and drive thru concept of Chipotle. He call the experience of the "a better proposition than delivery" because the customer controls the process more than the delivery experience.
