LAPD Video Captured incidents prompt chief to call community meetings
September 10, 2012 - Los Angeles - In response to the video tape beating (original article & video) of Tujunga resident Michelle Jordan and two other recent police violence videotaped incidents, Los Angeles Police Department Chief Charlie Beck has called for 21 community meetings at LAPD's 21 stations. Lt. Andrew Neiman did not disclose a specific date, but the meeting will be held soon "because it is such a hot topic right now."
The three incidents include:
- Security cameras at a Taco Bell caught two LAPD police officers slamming Jordan to the ground twice.
- Video captured four LAPD officers taking down and beating skateboarder Ronald Weekley in Venice. According to his attorney Benjamin Crump, Weekley suffered a concussion, broken cheekbone and a broken nose from the beating.
- Video surveillance in a LAPD patrol car showed an officer verbally assaulting a woman (Alesia Thomas) and stomping on her genitals as four officers took her down. The woman later died in police custody.
Residents outraged over the level and rate of violence exhibited by LAPD officers and wonder if there would be any accountability without video footage or security cameras that captured the incidents. How many other victims were denied their rights because cameras did not capture their plight?
