Panera’s double-lane drive-thru concept
Panera Bread, with over 2,100 bakeries in the great majority of states in the United States and mostly owned by JAB Holding Company (“JAB” or Joh. A. Benckiser) which also owns Caribou Coffee and Peet’s Coffee & Tea announced it will unveil its newest store configuration concept by the end of 2021 in St. Louis. It will open the new concept with a double-lane drive thru, dedicating one lane pick-up service. The concept of double-lane drive thru goes back decades and frequently used by QSRs such as In-N-Out in California and other smaller fast food restaurants with the needed space. Panera’s the dedication of a lane to just pick orders marries a staple of QSRs with digital ordering. Given the last 14 months and COVID-19 it is unsurprisingly to industry experts the concept is bringing greater emphasis on drive thru and online/mobile ordering. Panera’s “off-site” services (as referred by the company to drive-thru sales, take out, delivery and catering increased by over 100% from about 40 percent to close to 90 percent of sales during the COVID-19 pandemic.
