Video: JUST Released: LA County Sheriff Shooting Man in Back

The footage caught by surveillance cameras shows the Los Angeles County Sheriff getting out of his car and  20-year old Jonathan Cuevas running away from the officer towards the intersection of Josephine St. and Long Beach Blvd when the Sheriff draws his weapon and shoots him multiple times. The deputy walks over to the victim, who is now laying on the ground, and shoots him again twice. Of the seven shots that the Sheriff took four of the bullets hit the victim; the victim was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

Family attorney James Segall Gutierrez played the video surveillance footage for the first time on Friday to reporters. Counting the number of shots from the video, Gutierrez said, “One, two, three four, five,he stands, six, he stands over them, seventh shot.”

Los Angeles County spokesperson Steve Whitmore said,“This video that was shown today is partial, small part of this story. It is by no means telling the whole story." He added that the shooting had been deemed justifiable by internal investigators [affairs] and Office of Independent Review.

Cuevas’ fiancé and mother of their four-year-old son, Mayra Murillo,  “It doesn’t show that he makes a threat to the officer. He’s running. He gets shot in the back and he falls down and the officer stands over him and continues to shoot him.”

The victims family is currently suing the Los Angeles County Sheriffs Department along with the Sheriffs Deputy for wrongful death.
